We recommend that you use the STAR technique to structure your statement:

      • Scenario: describe the situation/setting
      • Task: explain your colleague’s role in relation to this scenario
      • Action: specify the action/behaviours you witnessed your colleague demonstrate
      • Result: comment on the positive impact their actions had

      Example

"Jess demonstrated their ethics and integrity when they addressed a potential H&S risk within their department.

I observed the resistance expressed by the budget holder who was concerned about the potential need to fund health and safety solutions in this area.

Jess remained calm and polite and acknowledged their concerns whilst explaining the greater potential cost to the organisation if this matter was not addressed and an accident was to follow.

They had clearly prepared for this conversation by looking into the finances in advance and was therefore able to handle objections.

They also explained her concern that not addressing the issue put staff at risk which was not in line with the organisation's values, saying that they were concerned for staff wellbeing and any potential reputational damage.

The budget holder was persuaded by these arguments and agreed to take corrective action. The issue was resolved successfully and the team's wellbeing was safeguarded and more extensive costs avoided."

      Example

"I attended a meeting led by my colleague Faisal where we were encouraged to consider what inclusivity means for our team. Faisal led us in a discussion to explore our diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

It was really interesting and I learned a lot about my team members. As a result, I was happy to share more about my own background than I have in the past. It has brought the team closer together.

Faisal then asked us to think about whether all our practices were fully inclusive and what more we could do to embrace diverse cultures amongst our colleagues and stakeholders. The discussion made me more aware of my own assumptions and I am now starting to look for evidence to disprove these.

It was a sensitive subject but Faisal created a safe space by establishing ground rules and treating us all with respect. This has led to a more positive culture for us all to work in."

      Example

"I appreciated how Jo handled a recent delay in the data report their team produces for my department which my team relies on to make pricing decisions. They alerted me to this delay as soon as they were aware of it and worked with me to identify the most urgent and critical elements of data so that these could be prioritised.

The delay was caused by technical issues outside Jo's control, but they took responsibility for getting the critical data to us in time for us to make essential pricing decisions. They had listened and understood that without this data profit on sales could be impacted. To achieve this Jo and their team had to work late and produce some of the information required manually but they took responsibility for making this happen.

As a result, we were able to use the data provided to make pricing decisions for the month ahead and ensure optimum sales and profit in our product area."

      Example

"Sam demonstrated that she seeks ongoing learning and professional development, when she asked me to contribute to her 360-degree feedback report. I added a comment suggesting that she might consult her direct reports more, as I felt this would help them to win the full support of the team.

Following this feedback, Sam held a meeting with the team asking for their ideas about a team away day. She listened carefully to their views and came back to them with some proposals to vote on. As a result, the team development day was inclusive, and everyone felt engaged and appreciated.

Sam demonstrated that she is open to feedback, seeks ongoing learning and is keen to pursue continuous professional development.

Lu demonstrated that they are open to feedback and seek ongoing learning and are keen to pursue continuous professional development."

      Example

"Chris demonstrated their flexibility and adaptability recently in response to the news that we would not be able to replace a member of their team due to a recruitment freeze. This was disappointing as it meant that team members, who were already stretched would need to take on more work.

However, when Sam met with his team to share the news he went on to explore opportunities to work more efficiently. He then made a business case for new software that had previously been rejected on cost grounds. He undertook a cost analysis and was able to show a positive predicted return on the investment.

As a result of their flexible approach and willingness to adapt to new circumstances this change was implemented at a fraction of the cost of an additional head count. The team have shared with me that they are happy to have the latest technology to work with and I am very pleased to see that productivity has gone up."
